Activity Description:
Disrupting the current level of operating room productivity and efficiency will be a major step toward true progress in the healthcare industry. The authors have utilized a simple formula of radical time transparency coupled with operational excellence to fundamentally change the productivity and efficiency of their hospital and ambulatory surgery center (ASC). Presently, they are routinely doing 12 primary total joint cases by 12:00pm in two operating rooms. This production and efficiency have brought true value to their healthcare system, and they believe there is no reason why this simple, reproducible process could not disrupt every OR and bring concrete, measurable value to all parties.
Learning Objectives:
- Elucidate the principles from other industries that healthcare can learn from to obtain safe efficiencies.
- Relate the current problems affecting operating room efficiency.
- Be able to clarify all the time inefficiencies that interfere with operational effectiveness in the operating room.
- Understand the different responsibilities of the surgeons and the operating room staff in the optimal equation to obtain operating room excellence.
